THE INITIAL APPOINTMENT

The initial appointment will take between 1-2 hours and focuses upon the psychologist developing an in-depth understanding of your current difficulties and your goals. You may be asked to complete questionnaires which help with gaining this understanding. The results of these will be shared with you.

At the initial appointment, the psychologist will talk with you about confidentiality and record keeping.

In collaboration with you, the psychologist will develop a treatment plan, which outlines the presenting concerns, treatment goals, techniques to be used, how progress will be monitored, and an estimate of the frequency and number of sessions.

It is natural to feel apprehensive about the initial appointment and your psychologist will be understanding and mindful of this. People typically find it easier to share than they were expecting.

THERAPY SESSIONS

Therapy sessions usually last 50-60 minutes. The frequency and length of therapy will depend upon your goals and progress and will be discussed as part of the treatment plan.

Your progress will be regularly reviewed to ensure that therapy is helping and you are moving towards your goals.

Therapy requires time and commitment, and you will need to practice skills and strategies between sessions. Together with your psychologist, you will decide upon tasks and challenges to support your progress toward goals.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Psychologists are bound by ethical and legal guidelines which means that your information will not be shared with any other party without your permission to do so. There are exceptions to this; if there is considered serious or imminent risk of harm to yourself or others. Different rules of confidentiality apply to children.
